From Casual to Glamorous: Maternity Photography Outfit Options for Every Style

As a soon-to-be mom, one of the most exciting moments during pregnancy is the maternity photo session. It’s the perfect opportunity to capture the beauty of your pregnancy and create memories that will last a lifetime. However, one of the most important aspects of a maternity photoshoot is choosing the right outfit. It can be overwhelming to decide what to wear, but fear not! I’m here to share some maternity photography outfit options for every style, whether you prefer casual or glamorous looks.

Keep It Simple with a White Dress

It's a classic and timeless piece that never goes out of style. And when it comes to maternity photography, a white dress is an absolute must-have in your wardrobe.

The versatility of a white dress is unmatched. You can style it in so many different ways to achieve the look you want for your photoshoot. If you're going for a bohemian vibe, a flowy maxi dress is the way to go. Look for a dress with delicate lace detailing, ruffles, or crochet to add some texture to your outfit. Pair it with a pair of strappy sandals or wedges and add a flower crown for a touch of whimsy. You'll look like a boho goddess in no time!

If you want to show off your curves, a fitted midi dress is the perfect option. Look for a dress that hugs your body in all the right places and accentuates your baby bump. It's a great way to showcase your beautiful pregnancy glow! You can dress it up with some statement jewelry or keep it simple with some dainty pieces.

Go Bold with a Bright Color

if you're feeling bold and adventurous, incorporating a bright pop of color into your maternity photoshoot outfit is an absolute must! Don't be afraid to stand out and show off your vibrant personality. A bright color can add so much fun and excitement to your photos and make them truly unforgettable.

Consider going for a solid-colored dress in a bold color like red, yellow, or blue. Not only will it make you feel confident and powerful, but it will also make you stand out in your photos. Or if you're feeling a bit more playful, try mixing and matching a patterned top with a solid-colored skirt. Just be sure to avoid anything too busy or distracting that might take the focus away from your baby bump.

Embrace Your Casual Side with Maternity Jeans and a Tee

Dressing up for your maternity photoshoot doesn't have to mean wearing a fancy dress. Believe it or not, maternity jeans and a simple tee can look just as stunning as a fancy dress. Plus, you'll feel comfortable and confident in an outfit that you're already used to wearing.

Accessories are key when it comes to dressing up a casual outfit. A statement necklace or bold earrings can make your outfit pop and add some glamour to your photos. Don't be afraid to play around with different accessories to find the perfect look for you.

Channel Your Inner Bohemian with a Flowy Maxi Dress

Regarding bohemian style, you're going to absolutely adore the flowy maxi dress for your maternity photoshoot! This style is all about comfort and freedom.

To channel that boho vibe, look for maxi dresses with patterns like florals or paisleys. The more intricate and colorful the pattern, the better! And don't forget to pair your dress with some comfortable sandals or boots to complete the look.

To take your boho style to the next level, add a floppy hat or statement jewelry. A statement piece of jewelry like a chunky necklace or oversized earrings can really tie the whole look together.

Glam It Up with a Sequin Dress

Who doesn't love a little bit of glamour and sparkle? A sequin dress is a perfect way to elevate your maternity photoshoot to the next level of elegance and sophistication. And the best part? You don't even need to go for a bright and bold color to make a statement. A neutral color like gold, silver, or champagne is all you need to let those sequins do the talking!

To let your sequin dress shine, keep the rest of the outfit simple with minimal jewelry and accessories. Let the dress be the star of the show and keep everything else understated. Trust me, with a sequin dress, you'll stand out in your photos like a true star!

Don’t Forget About Comfort with a Maxi Skirt and Top

Not only is it super comfortable, but it's also incredibly stylish and versatile! A flowy maxi skirt in a solid color or pattern is the perfect way to show off your baby bump while also keeping you comfortable throughout your shoot. Pair it with a simple top that complements the color or pattern of the skirt, and you'll have a gorgeous outfit that's perfect for any setting.

You can easily mix and match the pieces to create different looks! Wear the maxi skirt with a different top, or pair the top with a different skirt. The possibilities are endless!

And there you have it, my fellow mamas-to-be! There are so many amazing outfit options to choose from when it comes to maternity photography. From casual to glamorous, there's a style for every taste and preference!

But let's not forget the most important thing - you should always choose something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. After all, the main goal of these photoshoots is to capture the beauty of your pregnancy and create memories that will last a lifetime.

So don't be afraid to have fun with your outfit! Whether you choose a flowy maxi dress, a sequin dress, a casual tee and jeans, or a bohemian-inspired outfit, make sure it's something that represents you and your style.

At the end of the day, these photos are a celebration of your pregnancy and the incredible journey you're embarking on. So let your personality shine through and have a blast during your maternity photoshoot!

Do I Have to Be Naked for a Boudoir Shoot?

As a professional boudoir photographer here in Brooklyn, New York, I get asked this question all the time: "Do I have to be naked for a boudoir shoot?" The answer, my dear ladies, is a resounding no! Boudoir photography is all about celebrating your unique beauty, sensuality, and confidence. It's about feeling empowered and embracing your femininity in whatever way makes you comfortable. In this blog post, I'm going to debunk some common myths, share inspiring stories, and explain how you can create the perfect boudoir experience tailored to your preferences.

Myth #1: Boudoir Equals Nudity

One of the biggest misconceptions about boudoir photography is the belief that it requires you to bare it all. While some women choose to pose nude, the magic of boudoir lies in the art of suggestion. You can wear as much or as little as you like. Whether it's a slinky lingerie set, a cozy sweater, or even your favorite little black dress, the choice is entirely yours. We can create stunning, sensual images without crossing your comfort zone.

Your Comfort, Your Rules

The heart of boudoir photography is all about feeling comfortable and confident in your own skin. That means there are no hard and fast rules! The most important thing is to be true to yourself. If you're not comfortable with full nudity, that's perfectly fine. We can use strategically placed props, fabrics, or poses to maintain your comfort while still achieving alluring shots. The key is to communicate your preferences openly with your boudoir photographer, ensuring that your session aligns with your desires.

Myth #2: Boudoir is Only for "Perfect" Bodies

Another misconception that often lingers is that boudoir photography is exclusively for women with supermodel bodies. Let me set the record straight: there is no such thing as a "perfect" body. Each body is unique, beautiful, and deserving of admiration. Boudoir is for every woman, regardless of age, shape, or size. It's about showcasing your individuality, self-confidence, and the authentic beauty that makes you who you are.

Embracing Your Unique Beauty

I've had the privilege of photographing countless women of all body types, and I can say with confidence that every session has been a celebration of individuality. The experience of seeing yourself through the lens of a boudoir photographer can be truly transformative. It's a chance to discover and appreciate your unique features and to feel empowered in your skin. So, never let the fear of not fitting into a narrow beauty standard hold you back from experiencing the incredible journey of boudoir photography.

Myth #3: Boudoir is Only for Special Occasions

Many women mistakenly believe that boudoir photography is reserved solely for special occasions like weddings or anniversaries. While it's true that boudoir albums make extraordinary gifts, they can also be an amazing gift to yourself, regardless of the occasion. Every day is a perfect day to celebrate your beauty, confidence, and sensuality. So, don't limit yourself—embrace boudoir as a form of self-expression and self-love.

Capturing Your Authentic Self

Your boudoir session is a chance to create art that tells your story. Whether you're marking a significant milestone or simply seeking a boost of self-confidence, it's an opportunity to capture your authentic self in a beautifully intimate way. As your boudoir photographer, my goal is to make you feel truly seen through the lens. Together, we can create a timeless collection of images that remind you of your inner strength and sensuality.

Myth #4: Boudoir Photography is for Someone Else

Another myth that I often encounter is the belief that boudoir photography is primarily for a partner's enjoyment. While boudoir photos can certainly be a delightful gift for a loved one, they are, first and foremost, a gift to yourself. This experience is about boosting your self-esteem, embracing your sensuality, and celebrating your unique beauty. When you feel confident and empowered, it radiates from within, positively affecting all aspects of your life.

Empowering Yourself

Think of your boudoir session as an act of self-empowerment. It's an opportunity to express your inner strength, embrace your femininity, and capture your unique essence. As a professional boudoir photographer, I've seen countless women leave my studio with newfound self-assuredness and a sense of empowerment that goes beyond the photos. Your boudoir session can be a transformative experience, reminding you that you are a beautiful, strong, and confident woman.

How to Prepare for Your Boudoir Session

Now that we've debunked some common myths surrounding boudoir photography, let's talk about how to prepare for your session. Whether you choose to be clothed or partially nude, here are a few tips to ensure you have a fantastic boudoir experience:

Choose Your Wardrobe: Select outfits that make you feel confident and beautiful. Whether it's lingerie, your favorite dress, or something special you've always wanted to wear, pick items that reflect your style.

Pamper Yourself: Treat yourself to a day of self-care before the shoot. This could include a spa day, getting your hair and makeup done, or even just a relaxing bath.

Communicate Openly: Talk to your photographer about your preferences, concerns, and any specific ideas you have in mind. Clear communication is key to ensuring your vision is brought to life.

Relax and Trust: On the day of your shoot, remember to relax and trust the process. Your photographer is experienced in creating a comfortable and enjoyable environment for you.

Enjoy the Experience: Most importantly, embrace the experience and have fun! Boudoir photography is not just about the end result; it's about the journey and how it makes you feel.

Unexpected Items to Wear for Your Boudoir Shoot

If you're seeking a boudoir shoot that's far from ordinary, get ready to dive into the world of unexpected fashion choices that will take your boudoir experience to a whole new level. Break the mold, challenge norms, and celebrate your individuality with these surprising items that can transform your boudoir session into an extraordinary affair. So, let's explore these unexpected items to wear for your boudoir shoot!

Winter Coat: Ignite the Fire Within

Who says a winter coat is only meant to keep you warm? Picture this: a luxurious, fur-lined coat draped over your bare shoulders, hinting at the tantalizing secrets that lie beneath. The juxtaposition of the cozy fabric against your sensual ensemble creates an aura of mystery and allure. The unexpected combination of warmth and seduction will undoubtedly add a touch of drama to your boudoir shoot.

Not only does a winter coat exude elegance, but it also allows you to play with different textures and colors, creating a visually stunning contrast against your skin. Opt for a statement piece like a rich velvet or a plush faux fur coat to add a touch of opulence to your boudoir experience. The soft, tactile sensation of the coat against your body will ignite your senses and leave you feeling utterly glamorous.

Shapewear: Sculpt and Showcase Your Curves

Shapewear isn't just for tummy control anymore; it can be a secret weapon to enhance your natural curves during a boudoir shoot. Slip into a lacy corset or a sleek bodysuit that sculpts your figure, accentuating your curves in all the right places. The firm embrace of shapewear can boost your confidence, making you feel like a queen ready to conquer the world—or rather, the boudoir!

With advancements in shapewear design, you no longer have to sacrifice comfort for style. Choose pieces that are crafted with breathable fabrics and offer seamless construction, ensuring a flawless silhouette without any discomfort. Whether you want to create an hourglass shape, emphasize your assets, or simply feel supported and confident, shapewear allows you to take control of your boudoir shoot and embrace your unique beauty.

Sneakers: Embrace Comfortable Elegance

Glamorous heels have always been the go-to choice for boudoir shoots, but why not step into unexpected territory? Lace-up a pair of stylish sneakers that perfectly reflect your personality. These kicks not only provide unparalleled comfort but also add an edgy and playful vibe to your boudoir ensemble. Channel your inner urban goddess as you strut your stuff with confidence and grace.

By incorporating sneakers into your boudoir shoot, you're breaking free from the traditional notions of femininity and embracing a more relaxed and contemporary style. Play with contrasting elements by pairing sneakers with delicate lingerie or a flowy robe. The contrast of sporty footwear against the softness of your ensemble creates a visual dynamic that speaks volumes about your unique fashion sensibilities.

Swimsuit: Dive into Sensuality

Who says swimsuits are reserved for beach days alone? Embrace your inner mermaid and make a splash in a stunning swimsuit for your boudoir shoot. The sensuous lines of a one-piece or the flirtatious allure of a bikini can add an element of surprise and excitement to your intimate portraits. Allow the water-inspired ensemble to ignite a sense of freedom and confidence while showcasing your gorgeous figure in a new light.

A swimsuit brings a refreshing and unconventional element to your boudoir shoot, allowing you to explore different styles and cuts that flatter your body shape. Opt for a swimsuit with intricate details like lace, cutouts, or embellishments to add a touch of luxury. The sleek fabric of the swimsuit accentuates your curves and evokes a sense of confidence and empowerment. So, dive into sensuality, and let your inner siren take center stage.

Hat: Crown Yourself with Charisma

Ladies, it's time to top things off! Add a hat to your boudoir ensemble for a touch of old-world charm and mystique. Whether it's a wide-brimmed hat, a playful beret, or a seductive fedora, these head-turning accessories can elevate your shoot with flair. The hat not only frames your face but also acts as a symbol of empowerment, exuding confidence and intriguing the viewer's attention.

A hat instantly adds personality and character to your boudoir shoot. Choose a hat that complements your outfit and amplifies your unique style. Experiment with different angles and poses to showcase the hat's allure. Tilt it to the side for a coquettish look or wear it straight and proud for a touch of sophistication. Whatever style you choose, the hat becomes an extension of your charm, drawing the viewer's gaze and adding a glamorous element to your boudoir portraits.

Activewear: Athletic Elegance

Break free from traditional lingerie and embrace the fusion of comfort and style with activewear. Don a chic sports bra, sleek leggings, or a trendy crop top for a boudoir shoot that celebrates your active lifestyle and showcases your strength and determination. The sporty attire adds an unexpected twist, capturing the essence of a modern, empowered woman who is unafraid to push boundaries and redefine beauty.

Activewear allows you to showcase your sculpted physique, highlighting the hard work and dedication you've put into your fitness journey. Choose pieces that accentuate your best features and reflect your personal style. The sleek lines, vibrant colors, and breathable activewear fabrics lend a contemporary and energetic feel to your boudoir shoot. As you strike powerful poses, let the world see the embodiment of confidence and elegance that comes with embracing your athletic side.

Ballet Skirt: Grace and Poise

Unleash your inner ballerina and indulge in the ethereal beauty of a ballet skirt. The delicate layers of tulle gracefully cascade around you, embodying elegance and femininity. As you twirl and pose, the ballet skirt will create a whimsical ambiance, transforming your boudoir shoot into a fairytale-like experience. Let the magic and charm of this unexpected choice, and allow your fantasies to come to life.

A ballet skirt adds a touch of grace and softness to your boudoir shoot. Opt for a skirt with multiple layers for a voluminous effect, or choose a shorter length to showcase your legs. Pair it with a delicate bralette or a romantic lace top to create a dreamy and ethereal look. The ballet skirt captures movement and invites storytelling, creating a visual narrative that intertwines sensuality with elegance. Allow yourself to be transported to a world of enchantment and let the ballet skirt become the centerpiece of your boudoir fairytale.

Conclusion

It's time to step outside the box and let your imagination run wild. Your boudoir shoot is an opportunity to showcase your unique style and celebrate the beautiful individual you are. By incorporating unexpected items, you'll infuse your session with excitement and create memories that defy conventions.

Let your personality radiate, and watch as these unexpected items take your boudoir experience to extraordinary heights. Get ready to capture stunning images that tell your story in a way that's uniquely you!

A Recap of the Very First Boudoir in the City Event | An Iconic New York City Weekend

Earlier this summer I co-hosted a fabulous boudoir retreat with my favorite lingerie shop, Sugar Cookies and it was an amazing time. Here’s a recap:

About 2 years ago, I teamed up with Sugar Cookies NYC, a boutique I already loved, to bring boudoir into their shop for mini shoots a few times a year. We always had such a good time with our events, and so we wanted to find a way to take these in-store events to new heights. Each time we hosted mini Boudoir photoshoots at Sugar Cookies, we were delighted to see women of all ages, sizes and walks of life coming together to shop and cheer each other on as they got their photos taken. What we aimed to do with Boudoir in the City was bring a group like this together for a full weekend to connect, empower each other, and enjoy luxurious perks as an act of self love and self care… and I’m going to say we succeeded!

The weekend began with private shopping appointments full of bubbly and lots of lingerie. Attendees shopped on their own or with a friend as we discussed the most flattering silhouettes, the best ways to pose and what to expect from their upcoming photoshoot. This was the perfect introduction to our retreat and gave everyone the opportunity to get in the Boudoir mood!

Later that evening we headed downtown to the iconic Duane Park for a burlesque dinner show. I had been once before and it felt like the obvious choice for our retreat. The Duane Park experience is nothing short of decadent from start to finish. From the decor to the cocktails to the incredible performers, every detail is of the place is just perfect. A live band and singer accompanied glamorous burlesque performers as we ate a beautiful three course meal and sipped on Rosé. We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate confidence and to inspire each other for the following day of photoshoots.

Finally the day had come! Attendees were welcomed to the beautiful Wythe Hotel and led upstairs to our room drenched in sunlight and enveloped by a view of the New York City skyline. Bubbly, snacks, and lingerie awaited as I prepared each attendee for an epic photoshoot.

All of our attendees brought their brand new lingerie pieces from Sugar Cookies and posed all throughout the gorgeous room. This was a very special opportunity to shoot with me outside of the studio! After their shoot, many attendees took to the stunning rooftop of the Wythe for a celebratory cocktail. What a dream!

I even got to photograph my style icon, Susanne, the owner of Sugar Cookies (finally!) in some amazing silk pajamas by Skin Worldwide. These pjs made such a splash when Susanne wore them to the Curve Expo a week prior - literally everyone stopped her to ask about her look. It’s the perfect daytime or bedtime look. And great news - Susanne will start selling these pjs at the shop later this summer. It’s always such a special experience photographing a woman you admire. More images from that shoot will be coming soon.

Our ultimate goal for Boudoir in the City was to allow space for women to simply enjoy and indulge in some of the most unique experiences New York City has to offer. We had women from the city and from farther away joining us, and we loved sharing a full weekend dedicated to celebrating and empowering yourself through glamour.

If you missed the retreat, fear not - I will be teaming up with Sugar Cookies once again for something that’s … shall we say...next level. But before we make the big announcement we want your input! Our next retreat requires a flight & will combine all the fabulous elements of past events into one epic mini trip.

So whether you attended this retreat OR if you missed our Boudoir in the City weekend & are interested in a glamorous getaway in the future, we’d love for you to fill out this quick questionnaire so we can tailor our next experience to YOU.

xoxo,

Stephanie

A Conversation with Susanne Alvarado, Owner of Sugar Cookies Lingerie in NYC

Susanne Alvarado in Costa Rica

Susanne Alvarado wearing the Skin Reyna Caftan in Costa Rica

If you’re lucky, and if you’ve followed my pre-shoot recommendations, you’ll have crossed paths with Susanne Alvarado. It’s no secret that her shop, Sugar Cookies, is my favorite lingerie boutique in New York City, and that she and I take every opportunity we can to collaborate in serving our clients. And so, I wanted to interview Susanne and give everyone here a peek at the inspiring woman behind the business. Read on and you’ll see why she’s such an inspiration to me and so many others.

Let’s talk a little bit about how you got started. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself and what led you to creating Sugar Cookies?

I’m a firm believer that frustration opens the doors to something better. In my early career, I worked for two renowned lingerie brands. One of them, at that time, held the title of America's largest lingerie retailer. They valued their staff and invested heavily in hiring, retention, and fit training, which involved weeks of onboarding before working on the sales floor. I am grateful for the years I spent there, as I learned the fundamentals of lingerie and the importance of employee and customer satisfaction.

Later, I was hired to manage the lingerie department in an iconic luxury department store on Fifth Avenue. It was a remarkable opportunity, although the store is no longer in business. There, I had the privilege of working with exquisite European luxury lingerie brands, witnessing the intricate craftsmanship that went into each garment, from French laces to hand-stitched pieces. It was enlightening to see how Europeans approached lingerie differently, considering it an essential part of their daily attire.

However, I encountered frustration with the lack of sizing options at that company. On the sales floor, I would witness customers desiring beautiful lingerie sets but facing limitations in sizes, mainly ranging from B and C cups up to a 36 band size. Despite voicing my concerns to higher management, no changes were made. The department was visually appealing, but customers would leave empty-handed due to the lack of options in their size.

Realizing that my recommendations would never be implemented, I made the bold decision to leave and open Sugar Cookies, in my neighborhood of Chelsea, NYC in 2008. At that time, Chelsea had a different vibe, primarily attracting artists, men, and older individuals. It was a risk worth taking, knowing that I could always return to my previous jobs or similar roles in the industry if needed. Now, after 15 years, I couldn't be happier. Every day, I connect with customers and ensure that I provide them with the right products and sizes to meet their needs.

We believe Lingerie and Boudoir go hand in hand in making someone feel empowered. What do you think makes Lingerie so transformative and powerful?

Lingerie is often overlooked as a mere afterthought, despite being the first layer of clothing we put on. Some may question its purpose if no one will see it, but that's the wrong perspective. Well-fitting lingerie plays a crucial role in how your clothes fit and how you feel. It boosts your confidence, even if it's just for yourself.

Sugar Cookies NYC lingerie Boutique

What is a common pitfall you find women encounter when lingerie shopping?

Many women often complain about the discomfort of bras or lingerie, but the truth is that most of the discomfort stems from wearing the wrong size. When you wear the correct size, it should feel effortless without any pinching or digging. Another important factor to consider is that our bodies change over time, and even between seasons, depending on our lifestyle. It’s essential to get fitted by a professional fitter when lingerie shopping.

What do you consider the absolute must haves in your lingerie wardrobe?

Not necessarily in this order but all must haves:

1. Classic Black Lace Set… garter belt recommended but not a deal breaker.

2. Bodysuit

3. Bustier

4. Strapless Bra/Multiway Bra

5. Cheeky Boyshort

6. T-shirt Bra

7. Sexy Slip

8. Silk or Lace Robe

9. Seamless Bottoms

10. Shapewear

Do you personally have a favorite style of lingerie? Or better yet, what would be your go to lingerie for your own Boudoir shoot?

That’s difficult to answer… I’m a Gemini and that duality often has me playing both sides. I could tell you that I prefer classic, romantic lingerie styles then the next time you ask I’ll say I’m all about adventurous, bondage looks. I guess it’s a good thing that I’m a gemini because I’m constantly curious and open minded which is beneficial when I do my lingerie buying. If I were doing a Boudoir shoot with you next month I would say any of the latest pieces from Bordelle… I’m in an adventurous mood!

Similar to a boudoir photoshoot, shopping for lingerie can be intimidating. What would you tell someone who is nervous to come into the boutique?

Come on in! There’s nothing to be nervous about, our boutique carries exquisite, fancy lingerie but we are super low key and not pretentious. My staff and I have been in the lingerie industry for several years and make it a point to treat every customer equally and give them our undivided attention when they book an appointment with us. We listen to your needs, likes and dislikes then once we’ve fulfilled your wishes we’ll show you something you might have never thought of trying on but then must have.

At this point we’ve had three Boudoir & Bubbles events at the boutique and we’re already looking forward to the next one! What do you love about this event & working together? And what do you think attracts people to attend?

We make it easy for you! The enchantment of a boudoir shoot has entranced countless women, yet for some, taking that initial step can feel intimidating... Who is the ideal boudoir photographer for me, and where can I discover exquisite boudoir lingerie that makes me feel confident & sexy? This is precisely where our events come into play – they offer the perfect opportunity to venture into the world of boudoir and get a taste of what it's all about.

What distinguishes our events  lies not only in the breathtaking photos created  but also in the way women uplift and empower one another. It's a truly enchanting experience to see diverse women supporting each other in such a positive and uplifting environment where strangers become friends. Each event leaves me overjoyed and energized to plan the next one.

What’s next for you and Sugar Cookies?

Our partnership with Brooklyn Boudoir has been nothing short of amazing! As we continue to collaborate with Stephanie, we're ready to embark on other exciting cities, exploring new experiences, and even venturing overseas. Our Boudoir retreats opportunities are limitless so stay tuned!

Wardrobe Ideas for your Boudoir Shoot: The White Shirt

Woman in white shirt and sheer white bra from Eros_Brooklyn Boudoir Photo

Boudoir outfit inspiration

Your upcoming photoshoot is a big deal, so naturally the outfits you choose are important to plan carefully. After you book with me, I will send you a very comprehensive prep guide to help plan your looks. But in the meantime, I am starting this series of ideas for you to wearing during your boudoir session. Starting with …

The White Button Down Shirt

Ahh, the white shirt. Classic, classy, sexy, and already in your closet! There are so many ways to style a white shirt, and it’s always in style. Plus it looks good on EVERYONE, so naturally it’s one of my favorite pieces to photograph.

What style of white shirt should you choose?

I always recommend you choose a white button down without patterns, logos or details that could date the photo or be distracting. I personally love a shirt that it’s a little large (not too huge on you) and more summer weight - in other words, not too thick. A little sheerness is oh so sexy and a lighter material will move well when you do. I have a version of this kind of shirt in the studio if you don’t have one that you love.

Should I wear by partner’s shirt?

It’s always so fun to sneak your partner’s shirt out of the closet - so many of my clients do this and it always gives their partner a fun surprise. I would just call out that you don’t want the shirt to be TOO big on you-we still want to see you underneath it!

How should you wear a white shirt in your boudoir photoshoot?

There are SO MANY ways to wear the classic white shirt:

Woman in underwear buttoning white shirt Brooklyn New York
  • Wear it over lingerie, choosing how many buttons are closed to tailor the level of “edge” to your comfort zone.

  • Wear it completely undone, draped off the shoulder. My clients always love a “taking the shirt off” pose. Bonus if the shirt is a little sheer so we can get a peek of your silhouette underneath.

  • Wear it totally buttoned up with no pants

  • Wear it frumpy and wrinkled for a “just woke up like this” flavor

  • Hike it up to catch a glimpse of booty.

  • Styled with “his” accessories for a masculine-sexy feel

  • Tied up to show a little extra abs and give a ore fashion-forward feel.

Remember, you can be as revealing as you want to be during your boudoir shoot - from totally NSFW to completely covered up - and a crisp white button down gives you the flexibility to do just that. It also gives us tons of options for posing, gives you something productive to do with your hands, and is a classy, classy look that will never go out of style.

How to Make the Most of Your Boudoir Shoot | Boudoir Photography Tips | New York City

Trust me, I’ve got you.

Trust me, I’ve got you.

I have been a boudoir photographer for nearly five years now, have had several boudoir shoots of my own, in addition to all the self-portraits I’ve taken, so I know a thing or two about how you can make the most out of your own boudoir shoot. You may be thinking, “but Stephanie, can’t I just show up and have you tell me what to do?” Of course - and you can trust that you will be in the best of hands, with all the details being worked out for you. BUT with a little bit of preparation on your end, your shoot can be even more personalized which to me, equals a better experience, better photographs and more fun all around. Once you book your boudoir session I will send you a very comprehensive prep guide with tons of details about wardrobe, self-care, and inspiration. But for those of you who aren’t clients yet, here are a few tips on how you can best prepare for your shoot.

Plan ahead

I tend to over communicate with my clients because the last thing I want is for them to walk into our shoot feeling unsure about anything. Yes, I will be coaching you the entire time, but to help get to know you and your style better before the shoot I give you a homework assignment so you don’t feel like you are “winging it” on the day. (Didn’t think you’d still have homework as an adult, did you?) ;) One thing that I find particularly helpful is to create an inspiration board with images you love. Pinterest works great for something like this (and you can make a private board so no one needs to see it but you). This helps you hone in on your style visually, even if you don’t have the words to describe what you like verbally. Keep in mind that as you’re creating Pinterest boards, you aren’t trying to completely re-create a specific shot that you see. The point isn’t to bring in an image for us to replicate but instead to help you narrow your focus into a distinct vibes as the inspiration for your own shoot and styling. Here are a few of the images that I grabbed off Pinterest as inspiration for future shoots.

Brooklyn Boudoir Inspiration Board

Consider variety

One of the best ways to ensure a great shoot is to consider variety when planning your boudoir looks. Three matching bra & panty sets will not produce as dynamic a set of images as three totally different wardrobe ideas. There are lots of choices for wardrobe, and you can feel free to think outside the box. Maybe you’ll want to shoot in a cozy cardigan, then a bodysuit, then just the sheets. Or maybe your three looks would be a bra and panty set, a garter set and a badass blazer. Jeans, a bathing suit, a leather jacket, even a gown can look amazing. We can talk through the options together in your pre-shoot consultations. The point is, you can feel free to step a little outside your comfort zone, try something new and capture yourself in different looks & moods.

Trust your photographer

It is my passion to make women look amazing and beyond that, FEEL amazing. And it’s my superpower to make women feel comfortable, open and confident in their own skin. So ladies, TRUST ME. I’ve got you and your best interests at heart. And remember — it’s not YOUR job to know what to do, it’s mine. Once you arrive at your shoot, you’ll be pampered in the hair and makeup chair. This is your chance to RELAX and let go. Let go of those in insecurities, let go your negative thoughts, let go of control. I know that for a lot of my clients, this step can be very difficult – because, let’s face it, most of us have a little insecurity about one thing or another. But as soon as you let yourself think about those insecurities during your shoot, you give them power over you. Take back that power and tell yourself to let them go! You’ll have plenty of images to choose from, and I promise that you will love most of them. If there are one or two shots that you don’t love, that’s ok and no one ever has to see them ever again! So during the shoot, allow yourself the freedom to let go and embrace the entire experience. I promise it will be worth it.

I will coach you the entire time.

I will coach you the entire time.

Get an album.

I can’t emphasize this enough. You might think that you only want digitals but believe me, those digital images will go to waste. They will sit on your computer and barely get looked at. It’s a totally different story seeing your images in print - so much more powerful and ever lasting. These photos are ART. YOU are art. 20 years from now you will want to look back and remember that day you kicked your insecurities to the curb and felt like your best self. Many women purchase their album as wedding or anniversary gifts (which their partners of course LOVE). But more than just a gift for him, your album is a keepsake for YOU. So feel proud, display those photos, hang them on the wall, and look at your album often. Trust me, you’ll be happy that you did.

Print your photos!

Print your photos!

Enjoy the experience.

Sure, it can be nerve wracking, but I assure you the anticipation of your shoot will be more stressful than the reality of it. So try to relax and enjoy the experience! Channel that nervous energy into excitement, and do your best to soak in the whole experience. Listen to the music playing, look around at the studio’s environment, have a glass of champagne, chat with the HMU artist, and enjoy getting pampered!  Let yourself have fun and you will see, the most difficult part of the entire experience is making the first phone call.

Relax and have FUN!

Relax and have FUN!

Carry that confidence.

Every so often pull out that album and remember how much fun it was to get glammed-up, feel pampered, and rock your photo shoot. At this very moment while I’m writing this blog post, I am in my PJs… my toddler is alternately sitting on my lap and playing with her toys on the floor at my feet, and I am 8+ months pregnant with baby #2. I’m definitely not feeling my most glamorous right now. BUT, I have one of my old boudoir albums sitting on the table next to my computer and I just glanced through it again. And it feels great. I remember not being sure of myself that day — I was just a few months post-partum, not sleeping through the night and not feeling like i was looking my best. But the photos tell a different story. Which just goes to show that we are always our own worst critics and that sometimes you need to see yourself through someone else’s eyes to believe that. You ARE beautiful. You ARE strong. You ARE a boss, and wife and mom and all the things that make you YOU. It’s not just about putting on false eyelashes and lingerie. It’s more than some sexy poses and pretty photos. What I walked away with, and what I want all of my clients to walk away with is a sense of satisfaction, pride and confidence in myself.

It’s all about confidence

It’s all about confidence

So, my lovelies, as leave your boudoir shoot, I hope that you leave behind your insecurities and feelings of not being ‘enough.’ I hope that you walk away and take with you a renewed sense of confidence in knowing you are beautiful, you are gorgeous, you are enough. You are uniquely YOU, so carry that with you in your everyday life.

xoxo, Stephanie

What to Wear for Your Portrait Session - Maternity Edition! | Brooklyn Maternity Photographer

Maternity-portrait-Brooklyn-Boudoir_3.jpg

I recently blogged about no-stress boudoir wardrobe that you likely already have in your closet. But what if you’re pregnant and, well, not much in your closet actually FITS you right now?? There are still plenty of classic and classy options for your maternity portrait session, and you STILL won’t have to spend an arm and a leg.

KEEP IT SIMPLE

Maternity-portrait-Brooklyn-Boudoir_1.jpg
Maternity_Boudoir_New_York_1.jpg

This is my number one rule in ALL kinds of shoots. These photographs are of YOU not your wardrobe really and I don’t want to distract from your natural beauty, or create something trendy that you are embarrassed by 10 years from now. So in my mind, classic & simple is best. Overall, opt for solids over patterns and neutrals over bright colors - think black, white, grey, creme, navy and dark red. This helps keep the focus on you, your belly and your connection to the camera. I have a few simple stapes in my kit including a beautiful white lace gown (which looks beautiful on every body type)

MAKE IT PERSONAL

Boudoir-photography-brooklyn-maternity-photography-nyc-Boudoir-photography-nyc-3.jpg

All that said, many women opt to bring a beautiful silk robe form their wedding day or honeymoon, or her husband’s button down shirt as one of their wardrobe options. A snetimanetal item can add meaning and variety to your photoshoot. Often times this type of wardrobe will “breaks the rules” with brighter colors and patterns but in this case, it’s the meaning behind the piece that matters most. So if you love it, bring it!

SHOW OFF YOUR BUMP

There was a time when women wanted to hide their bumps under tent-like clothes and baby doll lingerie, but that’s not why you’re having your maternity portrait taken, is it? If you don’t feel comfortable showing off your bare tummy, consider form fitting pieces that hug your curves. I love a simple, stretchy tube dress for this and have a black one in my studio that amazingly fits so many women. It’s sleek, form fitting and timeless. Bodysuits are also a favorite of mine, or (if your regular bodysuits no longer fit) a black bathing suit or even a tight black turtlenects worn with a simple undie give the same idea. This look can be completely covered up and fashiony while still featuring your bump beautifully.

SWATHS OF FABRIC

Maternity-portrait-Brooklyn-Boudoir_2.jpg
Maternity_photographer_baby-bump-brooklyn-boudoir-studio-1.jpg

If you’ve been looking through instagram for inspiration you’ve no doubt seen images ot women with long flowy fabric flying up in the background. It makes an epic and artistic photos and was something I was setting out to learn when I mentored with the master of the fabric toss, Lola Melani this past summer. i have collected and a few large swaths of silk and chiffon for this dramatic and iconic look, which is particularly magical with a growing bump.

GO BARE

The “Demi Moore” was scandalous at the time but now is a classic for good reason! It’s intimate choice, natural and my personal favorite. There are so many different ways to be nude but also covered up in your photos. Your body never goes out of style. (Bonus that it requires the least amount of prep work or planning!) We can take this even further by applying some body paint to your bump - it’s edgy and artistic and when else in your life might you do something like that!?

Boudoir-photography-brooklyn-maternity-photography-nyc-Boudoir-photography-nyc.jpeg

Whatever you decide to wear, a maternity shoot is a beautiful way to memorialize this time in your life and something you will always be happy you did. The ideal time to have your maternity portrait taken is between 28 - 34 weeks so be sure to plan in advance and book during that “sweet spot.”

Stress-Free Boudoir Wardrobe | Brooklyn Photo Studio | What to Wear to Your Boudoir Shoot

Woman-Fur-Coat-NYC-skyline-brooklyn-boudoir

One of the most common questions i get from clients is, “what should I wear to my boudoir shoot?” It makes perfect sense - you most likely have never been photographed professionally before, must less in a state of semi-undress and you want to look your best. Ladies, I got you. Once you have booked your Brooklyn Boudoir Experience, I will send you a very informative guide that goes over what works well for different body types and what looks best on camera - this covers different styles of lingerie, what colors look best, and what textures to avoid, and I am always available to consult with you on wardrobe ideas. Many women feel they need to go out and shop for new sexy lingerie. If this is something you WANT to do, something that will make your photoshoot feel extra special (or simply give you an excuse to hit up Agent Provocateur), get it girl! But if it’s something you are stressing about - PLEASE DON’T! I am sure that there are pieces in your closet right now that you may not even be considering that work beautifully for any boudoir shoot. Check out these ideas for stress-free boudoir wardrobe options:

1 - BODYSUITS

brooklyn-boudoir-classic-boudoir-bodysuit.jpg

It’s no secret that bodysuits are one of my favorite wardrobe pieces to shoot. They look good on EVERYONE, regardless of body type and there are so many different options out there at many different price points. Yes, there are lingerie-style bodysuits (Journelle has some of my favorites) but there are also bodysuit tops out there that are totally covered up (very on trend right now, check out Cuyana). You can even wear a one piece bathing suit! Andies makes some really beautiful ones in classic styles.

2 - TEE SHIRT or TANK TOP

Badass-Feminist-tee-shirt-Brooklyn-boudoir-photographer

I find a classic white tank so sexy. It can be worn with or without a bra underneath for 2 totally different looks and can be wet down to kick the sex appeal up a notch. I love this look bra-less or with a black bra underneath if you want the extra coverage. Black tanks and cropped tee shirts give a similar effect. You can show as much or as little tummy as you want to with these looks - great for variety. And if you have a tee with a message you love — bring it! This ^^ “Badass Feminist” shirt ^^ is one of my favorites (currently out of stock but I am stalking the website to see when more are coming in).

3 - KIMONO, SCARF or ROBE

Woman-in-kimono-brooklyn-boudoir-photographer

This is another look that lets you choose how much or how little you want to show. A robe gives a cool, “I just woke up like this” vibe and you can be 100% covered up in it. Or, slip it down over your shoulder to show just a little bit of skin. I find shoulders, clavicles, collarbones and backs really beautiful. Scarves can serve the same purpose or we can play around with them to get some more energy & movement in your images — it can make a fun “peek-a-boo” moment.

4 - JACKETS

Beautiful-woman-in-plaid-jacket-brooklyn-boudoir

Fur, leather or even a blazer - I LOVE shooting women in jackets. It’s unexpected and modern — a real fashion moment. If you have a statement jacket you love, BRING IT!

5 - ACTIVE WEAR

The-Lace_Appeal-activewear-boudoir-photo-brooklyn-boudoir

So many women feel their sexiest and most powerful when they are working out. If this is the case for you, why not capture that feeling in your workout gear? With the rise of “athleisure,” active wear has become really sexy with fun cut outs, straps, and illusion panels, plus they tighten up the look of the body for a smooth line.

6 - COZY SWEATER

Brooklyn-Boudoir-Photographer-NYC-body-positive-IMG_2336-Edit.jpg

January felt about 75 days long to me this year, and all I wanted to do was cuddle up in a big cozy cardigan. Worn with a simple bra and panty or nothing at all underneath, it gives the vibe of an intimate evening at home. Extra bonus that you can show as much or as little as you want with this look, and use it to highlight some of your favorite, perhaps under-appreciated parts, similar to the robe look listed above (hello, collarbones).

7 - JEANS

Blond-woman-topless-jeans-brooklyn-boudoir

OK, I KNOW you have a favorite pair of jeans in your closet that make you feel like you can take on the world. Skinny jeans with a bra and heels gives a powerful, New York Woman feel, and a looser boyfriend style is easy to slip on and off for a suggestive, “leave something to the imagination” vibe. High waisted jeans when worn alone give a very modern, “fashionista that isn’t trying too hard” feeling.

8 - BUTTON DOWN SHIRT

Happy-woman-in-mens-button-down-brooklyn-boudoir

Many women like to bring one of their partner’s shirts in to the shoot — it’s a classic for a reason! Another great look is a sheer-isn button down of yours. When photographed backlit it shows just enough of your outline in silhouette and looks really artistic & graceful.

9 - TIGHTS

Woman-in-black-tights-brooklyn-boudoir

One of my earliest clients brought in a pair of opaque tights and I realized how genius it was! It’s totally unexpected, pretty much covered up, and also so fashion-y & sexy! Statement tights also work great to show off the legs.

Statement-fishnet-tights-brooklyn-boudoir

10 - BLACK BRA & PANTY

Body-posative-boudoir-brooklyn-photographer

Simplicity is often times the best! Whatever the texture - lace, cotton, sheer - a black bra and panty photograph and are sexy in an every day, not trying too hard kind of way.

11 - NOTHING AT ALL!

In-the-sheets-brooklyn-boudoir

Of course, no wardrobe at all is required for your boudoir shoot! “Nude” doesn’t have to be over-exposed or sexual. In fact, often times the nude looks we photograph are the most covered up of all! You can be ENTIRELY covered in a white sheet and look incredibly sexy. It’s all about what’s left to the imagination! Or, we can shoot fine art nudes that could be hung up on your wall without anyone knowing that it’s you. Or, hell, tell EVERYONE it’s you! There is no shame loving yourself and being proud of your body.

The truth is, “sexy” is much more about how you feel that what you are wearing. Whatever you decide to wear, trust me when I say, when you feel good you will look good. So feel free to think outside the box with your boudoir wardrobe and most of all, don’t stress it!

xoxo, Stephanie

The Sexiest Thing You Can Wear | What to wear to your boudoir shoot | Brooklyn Boudoir Studio

smiling-boudoir-photo-nyc

One of the most common questions I get from soon to be clients is - what should I wear?? A lot people stress about the right outfit for their boudoir shoot, and I’m here to tell you, you NEED NOT WORRY. Once you book your session I will send you a very detailed prep guide to help you decide what to wear, and I’m always available to talk through your wardrobe options before your shoot. I’m also working on a blog post (coming soon) about boudoir wardrobe that you already have in your closet. But beyond those things, I’m going to tell you the secret to a great boudoir shoot — are you ready for it, ladies?? The sexiest thing you can wear for your boudoir shoot isn't lingerie, your beau's favorite shirt, or nothing at all. The answer is: YOUR BEAUTIFUL SMILE.

Yes, that's right.  I said it. It is OK to smile/laugh in your boudoir photos!  Not only is it OK, but a full-forced laugh while you're sprawled out on your bed, in my opinion, is insanely sexy. To me, there is nothing more attractive than a woman who loves life and feels good enough about herself to bust out into laughter while in her lingerie.  ADDITIONALLY, it's probably going to be a lot easier for you to burst into laughter during your shoot than it will be for you to sport a sultry "come hither" look.  So no worries, and let yourself have fun (and show it!)

Now, a confession: I don't actually encourage my clients to smile for their photos. I DO want the smile, but when it happens, I want it to be genuine. I don't want it to be posed, staged, or faked. Fake smiles are surely NOT sexy to me. I want actual emotion.  And yes, a lot of your images will be more “serious” faced … but I have tricks to bring our some genuine laughter, and when it happens … magic.

Smiling-woman-brooklyn-boudoir-photo

Some of my favorite boudoir shoot moments came from my clients rolling into a fit of laughter after I ask them to give themselves a “sexy hug” (yes, it comes out as lame on set as it does on the page). Sometimes that laugh happens because I say an incredibly immature word hoping to elicit emotion (you'll know it when you hear it, and it works every time.)  Sometimes, I don't have to do anything at all, and you just laugh because you're feeling a little nervous. That's ok, too! There is nothing like some giggles to get the nerves out! No matter how we get it, I love it, and you will too, and so will anyone you show the photos to.  Seeing a person laugh is like looking through a window to their soul. And here’s the other thing — I’m often laughing with you so the photos aren’t always perfect — they might be off kilter or * slightly * out of focus. But I don’t care, because the moment was real, beautiful and perfectly imperfect just like you are.

SO, yes, the sexy face has it's time and place in boudoir, BUT ALSO, if you are lying there being photographed and you have the urge to laugh uncontrollably...don't fight it.  I want to capture you & all sides of your personality — sexy, funny, passionate, bold, tame — WHATEVER it is that makes you feel like your most authentic self, we will capture it!
